EMERALD FOREST
Janice Kephart
The peridot twinkle of a gentleman’s eyes
The emerald forest under the bluest of skies
Like the earth’s brown dirt that covers the finest of gems
I found you, flowered covered, of strongest stem
We flew through air with wings along the breeze
The emerald forest below, the world was ours to seize
Bring me around to the brightest light of day
With you I am not blinded
I see sun beams and don’t want to stray
You showed me emerald forests
You showed me the finest of gems
You gave me an angel’s chorus
Now I’m singing as if you’re my hymn
I call you emerald forest
I call you home
I call you emerald forest
With you I roam Repeat
The topaz twilight in a young child’s hand
The emerald forest where the thickest of trees stand
Roots dig deep, covering the finest of gems
I found you, flowered covered, of strongest stem
We flew through air with wings along the breeze
The emerald forest below, the world was ours to seize
Bring me around to the brightest light of day
With you I am not blinded
I see sun beams and don’t want to stray
You showed me emerald forests
You showed me the finest of gems
You gave me an angel’s chorus
Now I¢m singing as if you are my hymn
I call you emerald forest
I call you home
I call you emerald forest
With you I roam Repeat
I see my soul in the lake where the moon shines bright
The emerald forest is made for crystal clear sight
Glistening among branches are emeralds, the finest of gems
Amongst them I found you, flowered covered, of strongest stem
We flew through air with wings along the breeze
The emerald forest below, the world was ours to seize
Bring me around to the brightest light of day
With you I am not blinded
I see sun beams and don’t want to stray
You showed me emerald forests
You showed me the finest of gems
You gave me an angel’s chorus
Now I’m singing as if you are my hymn
I call you emerald forest
I call you home
I call you emerald forest
With you I roam

Monster

You’re a monster.
You’re a monster and you know it.
You roll the red carpet
You roll into the night
You roll out the hair piece
Then you dim the lights
You turn on the disco ball
You slip on the white leather shoes
You flip on the neon, the LEDs, and the strobe
You slide to the dance floor
But you keep on your shades
You’re the monster in the blue suit
The monster of the sea
Slipped onto dry land
Like a pirate in a reverse siege
You’re a monster.
You’re a monster but she doesn’t know it.
She steps onto the red carpet
She steps out into the night
She steps out of her gown of pearls
As you dim the lights
She is mesmerized by your disco ball
She slips out of her heels
She watches the neon, the LEDs, and the strobe
She slides into your bedroom
But you keep on your shades
You’re the monster in the blue suit
The monster of the sea
Slipped onto dry land
Like a pirate in a reverse siege
Don’t love her too much
Don’t pretend you have a heart
You’re all brawn in dark waters
And with you there is no good place to start
Maybe you’re Poseidon, the great Neptune of the Sea
But you’re too macho for even a Titan
You’re tuna in a can of Chicken of the Sea
You’re best if you go back to your little dingy den--
A monster of the sea!

Mermaid's Song

MERMAID’S SONG
This is the song of a red-haired mermaid
Who lived on mermaid lake
In a mermaid ocean
Where mermaids made melodies with the whales
The whales sang the mermaids’ praises
And the sharks and rays and jellies
Wove a liquid red carpet for
The red-haired princess
Of a backlit sun-filled teal world
This is the song of the red-haired mermaid
Who lived on mermaid lake
In a mermaid ocean
Where mermaids swam stormy waves with dolphins
The gymnasts of the sea
And the corals and anemones and clown fish
Lay a marbled floor for
The red-haired princess
In this backlit sun-filled teal world
This is the song of the red-haired mermaid
Who lived on mermaid lake
In a mermaid ocean
Where mermaids pirated the world of men
Here a whirlpool of vast seduction
Where secrets were tucked in centuries of silence
Where treasures were gemstone full
And the red-haired princess
Ruled, oh how she ruled!, this backlit sun-filled teal world
But this mermaid, this sparkling, glittering in the sun mermaid
Had her own secrets, her treasure that she loved
A titan’s son, tattooed with Poseidon’s specter on his brawny might
A treasure himself, the subject of, the subject of, his own book of rites
And the mermaid, this red-haired mermaid
With a conch shell held hovering near her
Blushing blooming lips
Sang this song on the edge of her darkness
Praying her longing no loyal subject would hear
For a merman, she only wished to know
This tattooed titan’s son so brawny, so beautiful, she for him wished to pirate
So she sang, her song:
Here, my hair falls above me
Here, you hold my face
Here you kiss me through the dark to the dawn
In my backlit, aqua teal world
Let my hair fall above me
The water-wind rustles my reds
As I dive deeper in your depths
My tail fallow, you, my personal island reef
Let the summer current hasten our love
Let the whales sing our praises
Let the dolphins bring us endless joy
The rays and jellies weave our red carpet entrance
While the corals, anemones and clown fish
Lay a marbled floor for
Me and you, my titan’s son
For here, my hair falls above me
For here, you hold my face
For here you kiss me through the dark to the dawn
In my backlit, aqua teal world

Word Problems

Word Problems
Pin me down, fill me up
Whisper sensual desires
Tickle me with words of fire
Here come the word games
Of which you never tire
You burn me up in the worst of ways
Work me to a frenzy
Then leave me wanting, pretending to love me
Then put down a grid
Lay down your words
Scramble me, pretending we’re some kind of love birds
Chorus
You’re a word problem
And I’m about to make you a past problem
I don’t care what you say
All the word games you play
I’m leaving today
And you’ll never hear a word
Cause leaving doesn’t make a sound
Until the next day
That’s what you do
That’s what you do best
You have a grid and box me in
Justifying this as some kind of perfect sin
Who the hell do you think you are?
Who the hell do you think you are?
What the hell, you have me groveling on the floor
You’re just a word problem
In a math equation
That doesn’t add up
Anymore
You said we had geometry
I said we had symmetry
You said sometimes we get A’s on biology
But you have it wrong, all we have is simple physiology
You’re a word problem
And I’m about to make you a past problem
I don’t care what you say
All the word games you play
I’m leaving today
And you’ll never hear a word
Cause leaving doesn’t make a sound
Until the next day
I needed your validation
I wanted some sort of accreditation
I longed for assimilation
But all I got was a long litany of discombobulations
You spin your words until they don’t make sense
You spin ideas until they are cockamamy nonsense
You’ve got my mind sitting squarely on a barbed wire fence
But mostly you’ve got me just feeling immensely dense
Words are best when they are clear and bright
Simple and straightforward minus the spite
Clear words reflect a clear mind
But yours are muddled, and so you try to tell me, so are mine
You’re a word problem
And I’m about to make you a past problem
I don’t care what you say
All the word games you play
I’m leaving today
And you’ll never hear a word
Cause leaving doesn’t make a sound
Until the next day
Who the hell do you think you are?
Just a word problem, minus the math score
You’re just a word problem
A word word word problem
You said we had geometry
I said we had symmetry
You said sometimes we get A’s on biology
But you have it wrong, all we have is simple physiology
You’re a word problem
And I’m about to make you a past problem
I don’t care what you say
All the word games you play
I’m leaving today
And you’ll never hear a word
Cause leaving doesn’t make a sound
Until the next day
You’re just --

Listen to the Forest
The sweet longing of the moon awash in a river's glow
Of a lover's kiss before the dawn of the first snow
The gentle brush of a breeze on an out-stretched hand
Of a soul’s vibration before it takes flight from an ever-greening land
I held my breath but you inhaled for me
I held my heart but you beat an extra beat for me
I held my eyes fastened in yours
Until you held my mouth open with the movement of yours
The moon, it is awash in a river’s glow
This lover longs for more kisses, before the first snow
The breeze, it lends its own outstretched hand
Calming my soul’s vibration so it can safely, land
I held my breath but you inhaled for me
I held my heart but you beat an extra beat for me
I held my eyes fastened in yours
Until you held my mouth open with the movement of yours
Our love is real-- at least for now, says this side of the moon
In a river’s glow-- at least for now, I say, with the tiniest, sweetest most gentle of swoons
In a breeze’s brush-- at least for now, before the sun’s high, at tomorrow’s noon
Just please, my dear, tell my soul not to leave this, not to leave this, too soon
I held my breath but you inhaled for me
I held my heart but you beat an extra beat for me
I held my eyes fastened in yours
Until you held my mouth open with the movement, the movement, the movement, of yours
